Modernization of Applications
The HM Strategy of Modernization is implemented in stages so that the migration is split into easily assessable, small parts.
An overview of the HM Strategy of Modernization
- Analysing the legacy system
By understanding the legacy system the basis for a succesful migration is established. Aside from incorporating the current system structure and analyzing the documentation, reverse engineerring is also a way to accomplish this.
- Deconstructing the legacy system
To preserve existing interfaces between individual modules and the database back-end the legacy system is 'disassembled' and the necessary interfaces defined.
- Creating the migration concept
Following the analysis of the legacy system a detailed migration concept is created. This concept will form the basis of the migration as agreed upon with the customer.
- Optional: Developing the GUI of the new system
In accordance with the new parameters new GUIs are developed and tested for usability.
- Optional: Developing the new application
After deciding wether the application functionality of the legacy system should be recreated or taken as a guideline development of the new application starts.
- Developing the database back-end
To implement the best possible relational database the requirements of steps 1-5 are included in the development to create the best possible system.
- Installing the new environment
Following the completion of all components every necessary functionality test is conducted in a testing environment to troubleshoot at an early stage.
- Developing and installing gateways
When the system is running flawlessly gateways to transfer data from the legacy to the new system are developed.
- Migrating databases from the legacy system
After testing the gateways in the new environment and additional tests with the migrated data the new database system is installed. Following this the migration of data from the legacy to the new system begins.
- Migrating legacy applications
When the new system is running flawlessly all necessary modules of the legacy system are replaced. All modules are adjusted to and implemented in the new system.
- Activating the new and turning off the legacy system
Finally the new system is activated and the legacy system backed up and turned off.
